Jim was born and raised on a dairy/small grain farm in Ellendale, North Dakota. Jim graduated from the University of North Dakota—Ellendale Branch with a teaching degree. He also completed the intensive bank management program through the Graduate School of Banking in Boulder, Colorado.
His working history includes teaching school in Oakes, North Dakota, for six years, operating a small business in Britton, South Dakota, for four years, and working with Wells Fargo in Britton, Groton, Huron, and Aberdeen for a total of 29 plus years. In 2004 Jim retired as District President of Wells Fargo Bank in Aberdeen.

After retirement they moved back to Huron to be near family and friends.  His retirement has allowed him time to work on various organizations in the community and surrounding areas including District 22 South Dakota House of Representative,  Chairman of Huron Regional Medical Center Board, Huron Community Campus Board Member, Member of Sertoma, Mitchell Technical Institute Board Member, Member and Stewardship Chairman of Hope Lutheran Church, Past Member and President of Huron Development Corporation, Member and Past President of Huron Chamber of Commerce.  In 2012 and 2014 he was elected as Senator from District 22. In 2015 Jim was elected Assistant Senate Majority Leader. He has been on the Appropriations Committee and will continue to serve on this committee.
His family includes his wife Paulette, a retired teacher; son Jim and his wife Eden, owners of Dakota Environmental, Inc.; son Spencer, President of Farmers and Merchants Bank, and his wife Jamie, with the Farm Service Agency; and six grandchildren all of Huron.
Jim’s hobbies include outdoor activities, including golfing, fishing, and hunting, especially with his sons and grandchildren.
